Surgical Orthodontics
Surgical orthodontics is a type of orthodontic treatment done in coordination with an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. It is used to correct cases that include jaw bone abnormalities, and severe malocclusion. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, and it focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If you need surgical orthodontics, Dr. Thomas will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the best care possible.
When might surgical orthodontics be needed?
The jaw must be done growing in order to proceed with orthognathic surgery. The need for surgical orthodontics occurs when malocclusion is so severe that a proper bite cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone. Orthognathic surgery will help properly align the jaw, and braces are used to move the teeth into their proper position.
How do I know if I need orthognathic surgery?
Dr. Thomas can tell you if orthognathic surgery is recommended as part of your treatment.
How does orthognathic surgery work?
Like all orthodontic treatments, we begin with placing braces. We make any adjustment needed to the position of the teeth prior to surgery. Once your teeth are in the ideal surgical position, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon will perform your orthognathic surgery. After your jaw has healed, you will come back to see Dr. Thomas to “fine-tune” your bite. After your braces are removed, we provide you with upper and lower retainers, and we will see you periodically for retainer checks.
What are the risks associated with orthognathic surgery?
As with any major surgery, there may be certain risks of having orthognathic surgery. If you have any questions or concerns about orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery, please call our office. We are happy to answer any questions that you may have, and provide you with any additional information.
